The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
